How To Cope Practically, Emotionally, and Spiritually When a Loved One Has a Serious Illness

“Until a person has faced a serious challenge in life, it’s doubtful that he or she has prayed with the fervor one does in a situation that, at least for them, is truly ldesperate. This is where you learn, if you don’t know it already, that God is not some abstract being “out there.” He is here and He is listening — to YOU! He cares about YOU! He is ready to help YOU!”
But here’s the thing: You have to ask.
It begins with a decision The most important thing you can do is to DECIDE that you are going to be there for your beloved no matter what. No matter what!
But , if you’re like me, you then immediately start to worry if you are up to the task. I did. But what I understand more fully now than what I intuitively did then: It’s not a matter of gutting it out. In and of myself, I was afraid I wouldn’t rise to the challenge. It is only by holding on tightly to God’s hand that we are able to stand by a loved one and to do it with love. It’s a grace — and that grace is yours for the asking — and it doesn’t need to be some long involved prayer. As I said, mine was only four words: Divine Physician, help me! Continue reading
